The Solar Energy
Institute takes place every summer at Camp Colton, near
Flagstaff, Arizona. Camp Colton is a stand-alone
solar-powered educational facility owned by Flagstaff
Unified School District. This solar energy laboratory,
located in the shadows of the San Francisco Peaks,
provides a perfect setting for a scholarly retreat.
The one-week program
gives student delegates the opportunity to exchange
ideas with professionals in the field of solar energy
and other professionals from the academic and corporate
worlds. Delegates are selected through an application
process that rewards both academic achievement in
science and leadership achievement. In addition to
scholarly endeavors, the Institute strives to broaden
and encourage a sense of civic awareness among
delegates.
The summer forum
offers lectures, tours and hands-on research
experiences. Visiting lecturers are invited based on
their reputations as leaders in the solar energy field.
Guest speakers include university professors, solar
architects, political theorists, utility company
representatives, and business professionals.
The Solar Energy
Institute's academic program is complemented by an
outdoor recreation program that takes advantage of the
camp's location in the Coconino national Forest to offer
hiking and exploring. Because of the Institute's
location, delegates have the opportunity to visit such
Arizona landmarks as the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon,
Arcosanti, and Montezuma's Castle.
The Solar Energy
Institute is offered at virtually no cost to its
participants. Educational and recreational programs, as
well as meals and lodging is provided. With financial
support from the Arizona Department of Commerce,
selected Arizona delegates may attend regardless of
their financial status. Students from states other than
Arizona must be sponsored by an organization from that
state.

selections from the applications submitted.
